About the event

You don't get to choose what happens to you. You do get to choose what you do next.

That idea has sold Ryan Holiday over 10 million books and made him the person the Patriots, the Spurs, and a long list of CEOs call when the pressure is on. He's spending the morning of November 17 with our chapter for a moderated conversation and Q&A at Harvard’s new David Rubenstein Treehouse.

About Ryan Holiday

Few writers have done more to bring ancient, timeless wisdom and cutting-edge marketing strategies together than Ryan Holiday. His philosophically driven bestselling books have sold over 10 million copies and spent more than 200 weeks on bestseller lists. He has directly influenced Super Bowl-winning teams like the New England Patriots, NBA Champions like the San Antonio Spurs, and Olympic Gold Medalists, as well as sitting Senators, military leaders and some of the biggest and most important companies in the world like Google, Twitter and Microsoft.

At the core of Ryan's teachings is Stoicism, popularized through his New York Times bestselling books, including The Obstacle Is the Way, Stillness Is the Key, Ego Is the Enemy, Discipline Is Destiny, Right Thing, Right Now, and his latest book, Wisdom Takes Work. Stoicism is the idea that while we don't always control what happens to us in life, we always control how we respond. Illustrated vividly with stories from the greats of history, Ryan provides a framework for overcoming obstacles, scaling new challenges, and navigating both the ups and downs of life. Profiled by The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, and ESPN, Ryan counts among his clients and followers some of the biggest names in business, tech, culture, and professional athletics.

His book Trust Me I'm Lying revealed the vulnerabilities in the global media system back in 2012, and his books are now taught in colleges and marketing programs around the world.

Ryan lives just outside of Austin, Texas, where he writes in between running his bookstore The Painted Porch, raising two boys, and taking care of his donkeys.

About the venue

The David Rubenstein Treehouse opened on Harvard's Allston campus in January, and it won't surprise you to see how it's earned that name. Studio Gang designed it in mass timber - a first for Harvard - with columns that branch outward like trees and a triple-height atrium lit from skylights above. The building burns no fossil fuels, and its embodied carbon is 60% below a conventional build. It also moves 75% more fresh air than code requires, which may have you starting your day a little more refreshed than normal.
